Episode Eight is now live on Youtube and in podcast feeds!

On June 29, Pope Francis released a new Apostolic Letter, Desiderio Desideravi. Normal people get really excited when a new magisterial document drops, right? Unfortunately, I had to wait a few days to read it because I was neck deep in a huge research project for school. Before I read it I told Dominic, “let’s talk about this document next week on the podcast.”

I will probably be writing about Desiderio Desideravi for a long time. It is one of the most beautiful theological documents I’ve ever read. It reminded me why I love the liturgy so much. It pushes aside the polemics and “liturgy wars” and points to the heart of the matter: God’s desire to encounter each one of us through the liturgy.

Here’s my first take on it though.

This week, Dominic and Paul discuss Pope Francis’s new Apostolic Letter, Desiderio Desideravi. This document, while a follow up on the regulations that the Holy Father put on the old Latin Mass last summer, is primarily a catechesis about God’s desire for each one of us and how we can encounter him. The pope teaches that we really and truly encounter God—mediated through material symbols—in the liturgy, and through that encounter with him, he makes us divine.

“‘I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.’ (Lk 22:15) These words of Jesus, with which the account of the Last Supper opens, are the crevice through which we are given the surprising possibility of intuiting the depth of the love of the persons of the Most Holy Trinity for us” (Desiderio Desideravi, 2).

ABOUT DOMINIC DE SOUZA SmartCatholics founder, Dominic de Souza, is a convert from radical traditionalism – inspired by WherePeterIs, Bishop Robert Barron, and Pope Francis. He is passionate about helping ordinary Catholics break the ‘bystander effect’, and be first responders. “We don’t have to be geniuses. We just have to show up with witness and kindness. Christ does the rest.” Today he hosts the SmartCatholics community.
